How to Enter: Criteria

Submission Criteria

  • All entered work must have been produced between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2009 and must have been produced in Canada.
  • All entry forms are completed and submitted online.
  • Submit only actual hard-copy versions of work.
  • Digital photographs are only accepted for submissions in which hard-copy originals cannot be provided. Photographs should be saved as RGB (not CMYK) JPG format (max. 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 300 DPI).
  • All mailed-in pieces should be accompanied with a print out of the corresponding entry form.
  • Entries and submissions cannot be returned once entered.
  • Any entries in languages other than French or English must include a brief English translation.
  • By submitting entries, you permit Design Edge Canada to publish your entered work in print and online for related promotional purposes.
  • Judges may disqualify an entry or change the category or region of an entry after deliberation; entrants will be notified of any changes.
  • All judges’ decisions are final.

Category Requirements

1. Logos: Logos must be printed in colour and centred on a letter-size (8-1/2” x 11”) sheet. Make a note of the purpose of the logo in the lower-right corner (e.g. “for bakery,” “for record label” etc.)

2. Identity applications: Includes print collateral, stationery, apparel, tchotchkes, and other applications of the logo. Up to five pieces may be submitted and counted as one entry. For example, a single entry can include one each of letterhead, business card, and an envelope. Pieces should be unmounted.

3. Advertising design, print: Includes direct mail, magazine single, magazine spread, newspaper single, newspaper spread. Submit trimmed tearsheets or proofs up to maximum size of 18” x 24”. For print pieces larger than 18” x 24”, please submit a JPG file with resolution of 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 300dpi.

4. Advertising design, web: Includes banners, pop-ups, pop-unders, expandables, microsites, advergaming. Submit UP TO five images from your project as letter-size (8-1/2” x 11”) print outs. If your web advertisement will be publicly available online at the time that entries are judged (active thru April 30, 2010), include the URL with your submission. If the URL will not be active as of April 30, 2010, your web advertisement may be submitted on CD. All digital submissions on disk should be self-contained applications or launch within an offline browser. Label disk with your name and entry ID number.

5. Advertising design, outdoor: Includes out-of-home, point-of-purchase, transit ads, billboards, vehicle wraps. Pieces may be entered individually or as a series. Up to 5 digital photographs of the outdoor advertising series may be submitted as a single entry. Photographs should be saved as RGB (not CMYK) JPG format (max. 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 300 DPI). Themed environments, animated billboards, and other environmental project that contains moving parts may be submitted as QuickTime files on DVD or CD. All digital media entries submitted on disk should be self-contained applications or launch within an offline browser. Label all disks with your name and entry ID number.

6. Editorial: Includes magazine or newspaper single, spread, section, cover, entire issue. Magazine and newspaper singles or spreads should be submitted as a complete set of tearsheets or proofs, up to a maximum size of 18” x 24”. If you are submitting a complete issue, please submit it in a bound form. Do not separate it into tear sheets.

7. Print design: Includes books, brochures, catalogues, annual reports, reports, and other bound print projects. Submit a complete issue in bound form. Do not separate into tear sheets.

8. Web design:  Includes websites. Submit UP TO five images from your project as letter-size (8-1/2” and 11”) print outs. If your website will be publicly available online at the time that entries are judged (active thru April 30, 2010), include the URL with your submission. If the URL will not be active as of April 30, 2010, your website may be submitted on CD. All digital submissions on disk should be self-contained applications or launch within an offline browser. Label disk with your name and entry ID number.

9. Environmental: Includes wayfinding, signage, retail, exhibits. Pieces may be entered individually or as a series. Up to 5 digital photographs of the environmental series may be submitted as a single entry. Photographs should be saved as RGB (not CMYK) JPG format (max. 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 300 DPI). Themed environments, rotating signs, and other environmental project that contains moving parts may be submitted as QuickTime files on DVD or CDs. All digital media entries submitted on disk should be self-contained applications or launch within an offline browser. Label all disks with your name and entry ID number.

10. Packaging: Includes consumer packaging, labels, shopping bags, records, CDs, DVDs, software and gift or specialty products. Packaging must be submitted as actual pieces, even if oversized. If you have concerns about shipping food or beverages, you can replace the contents with coloured water or send empty containers. Variations of one entry (e.g. packaging for different flavours of the same product) are considered ‘one entry’. Up to five pieces may be submitted for one entry. Photographs will not be accepted in this category.

11. Typography: Includes any piece where type is the main feature. Submit trimmed tearsheets or proofs up to maximum size of 18” x 24”. For print pieces larger than 18” x 24”, please submit a JPG file with resolution of 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 300dpi.

12. Miscellaneous: Includes self-promotion, invites, announcements, posters. Submit trimmed tearsheets or proofs up to maximum size of 18” x 24”. For print pieces larger than 18” x 24”, please submit a JPG file with resolution of 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 300dpi.

13. Student work: Includes school projects fitting any of the above categories. All entered work must have been produced between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2009 as a school project and not be used in the marketplace. Students must have been enrolled in a post-secondary institution at the time the work was created.
