SAINT-JÉRÔME, QC—Cascades Fine Paper Inc., based in this town at the foot of the Laurentians north of Montreal, is promoting the low carbon footprint of its 100% recycled paper.

The company has published a new report that states one metric ton of North American virgin paper, on average, produces the equivalent of 4245.1 kg of carbon dioxide, while the same ton of 100% recycled paper produces 1791.1 kg. The 100% recycled paper manufactured by Cascades produces 270.4 kg, the company states.

In addition to the use of recycled fibre, the mill’s reliance on Quebec’s hydro power and biogas piped from a nearby landfill site helps keep related CO2 emissions low, the report says. The report is based on data and analysis from engineering firm Dessau, Climate for Ideas.org, the Paper Task Force and the Environmental Defence Fund Paper Calculator.
