Cooper-Hewitt to receive renovation
NEW YORK—The Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum is getting a facelift, according to yesterday’s New York Times.
The museum plans to begin work in January on its expansion and renovation, having already raised over half of its $64 million budget.
“The project is aimed at energizing the Cooper-Hewitt, regarded in recent years as a somewhat sleepy institution, by carving out space for more ambitious shows and the display of works from its permanent collection,” reports the New York Times.
It goes on to add that the Cooper-Hewitt will need to develop its own unique identity in light of the Museum of Arts and Design’s recent reopening of its “radically redesigned” building last month.
Meanwhile, Torontonians eagerly await the reopening of the Art Gallery of Ontario, scheduled for mid-November. The AGO has been closed since last October while it receives a $254 million Frank Gehry makeover. Read more about the AGO reno in the Sept/Oct issue of Design Edge Canada.
