P22 releases two new fonts
BUFFALO—This month, Buffalo-based type foundry P22’s International House of Fonts released two new typefaces, Coda and Mai, both created by Norwegian type designer Torleiv Sverdrup. A freelance graphic designer for more than 20 years, Sverdrup has also designed Hoy Pro, Late November Pro and Spiggie Pro for P22.

The type foundry describes Coda as “a simple but decorative and controlled sans serif design… well suited for display purposes.” The Coda family of fonts is available for $97.46 until the end of August, and will cost $129.95 after this promotion.
“Coda means ‘tail’ or ‘end’ in Italian, from the Latin ‘cauda,' and suggests the way the letters h, m, and n stretch below the baseline before a final stop, a comma or an exclamation or question mark when you activate the 'contextual alternates' option,” says Sverdrup.
As for Mai, the foundry describes it as “a new transitional antiqua that features ligatures, small caps and full Central European support. Mai's classic design is understated enough to be used for long running text applications yet includes unique characters suitable for design purposes.”
According to Sverdrup, his inspiration for the Mai typeface was to give a simple, modern form to a classic design. “Mai” is the Norwegian name for the month of May, the month when he finished designing the font. Sverdrup wanted to associate Mai with the lightness of spring and summer, “when the days are long and the nights are luminous and short.” The Mai family of fonts is available for $59.96 until the end of August, after which it will cost $79.95.
