Top newspaper ads awarded
TORONTO— The winners of the 20th annual Extra Awards, produced by the Canadian Newspaper Association (CNA) were announced last week. Celebrating excellence in newspaper print advertising, Extra Awards were given to winners in 18 categories. CNA CEO, John Hinds says despite tough times the number and quality of entries remained strong. “We were really pleased,” he says. “It is really important to emphasize good creative in newspapers. We forget what an amazingly creative medium newspapers are. It is important that agencies and advertisers see what great things you can do in a newspaper.”

Having not participated in the contest for six years, Extra Awards Co-Chair John Farquhar says he was surprised by the quality of the entries. “This year clients didn’t want to spend a lot of money so it had to be really good work.”

Cossette Toronto took Best of Show with its work for McDonald’s in the Edmonton Sun. Its strategically placed egg, sausage and cheese on the front page combined with a food wrapper turned the paper into a giant McDonald’s breakfast burrito. Contact: Prixextraawards.com
