Designing a dig at Giambrone
TORONTO—Political scandal isn’t often in bed with design but a local design studio employee Sonya Popovich was inspired to create an “I slept with Adam Giambrone” button following his recent public scandal. “I just don’t like how he lies. Lies around that is,” says Popovich.
Giambrone is a Toronto councillor and former Toronto mayoral candidate who pulled out of the race last week following a chain of infidelity accusations.
Popovich enlisted the help of Toronto-based freelance designer Nancy Reid to design the button and then distributed 500 of them to people who promised to wear them proudly. “People wearing the button instantly get a reaction,” says Popovich. “They either look away or they say wow or smile.”
Reid says she designed five options for the button and, based on a friendly suggestion, chose a typeface that looks like Jilly’s, a local strip club. “I decided on using a sleazy typeface, something ‘70s and retro,” says Reid. “That is essentially where I went with it, something sleazy and tacky. I ended up using Cooper [Black].”

Design Buzz on the Web

One is in love with himself (Phil-the-fat-f*ck, is known on the PGA Tour as FIGJAM), the other has a problem with infidelity -- YES PEOPLE ARE MORE NEGATIVE WITH THEM! I'm with Howard Roak on this… post some relevant design news!
- I at least give Design Edge credit for not censoring critical comments. However, I agree that their amateur, poorly designed button is not design news ... and neither of them should get any press for something so silly.
"SONYA POPOVICH & NANCY REID SLEPT TOGETHER"
Funny? I am pretty sure neither of them would appreciate such "humour". Grow up.
Lighten up. She wasn't trying to win a design contest.
She was being a bit of an activist and having a laugh at the same time.
Having a laugh at his expense isn't funny ...
I am not a friend or fan of Giambrone, but getting 500 people to slam his character "proudly" is far from being an activist. I wonder if either of them has ever cheated on a partner? It happens - and we should not be making light of other people's mishaps - even if they are politicians. Imagine if his girlfriend was to see that button on someone - not so funny for her. We must have more compassion than a "pimp" with a stick.
I like Peter's response the best :
"SONYA POPOVICH & NANCY REID SLEPT TOGETHER" ... and gave birth to one UGLY button
...hopefully some people will come on here and "voice the truth" about your personal lives ...then you will know how it feels. the relationship mistakes of others (even politicians) are not things we need to get a laugh from.
I agree with Lynn, what about when his girlfriend sees your ugly joke button. both of you should be ashamed.
i love it!!! that sums this article up
My hat is off to Sonya! Thank you for the inspiration.
Design that ridicules others is not 'public good' -- surely this corny button idea did not create much of a dialogue -- beyond this forum.
As the above comment said, Sonya Poopvich's 15 minutes (or seconds) are up.
