STOUFVILLE, ONT.—Paper giant Sappi has announced its 10th Ideas that Matter grant program and wants to see more Canadian designers apply for funding before the July 26 deadline. “It shouldn’t be this tough to give away money,” says Phil Lavell, district sales manager for Sappi Fine Paper North America.

The program grants $5,000 to $50,000 to pro bono communication projects aimed at contributing to the greater good of society. Lavell says the company has given an average of $1 million per year in grants since the global project’s launch, but Canadians have been under represented as recipients because few actually apply to get the funding.
Recipients are selected by an independent committee of design industry professionals and will be announced in September. Ideas the Matter accepts applications from both individuals and groups from within the design community including designers, students and instructors.
