Old logos inspire new CHCH identity
HAMILTON, ONT—Television station CHCH's new identity harkens back to designs from its former years.

Created by CHCH's in-house design team, the station’s new insignia had to be compelling to new viewers and familiar to exisiting ones, says CHCH graphic artist Juan Bonilla. The logo, which consists of circles of colour intersecting eachother, was originally used when the channel switched to a full-colour station.

A refresh of an older logo is what a project requires rather than a completey new look, says Bonilla. “Sometimes there is a radical design that breaks everything apart,” says Bonilla. “But sometimes it makes sense to come back to what people are used to, to what people love.” Contact: Chch.com

Hello Val and Design Edge readers,

Just wanted to comment, the rebrand was done in-house, as per the article. Paul Sych from Faith did work on the final design of the logo, though, and I did not want to bypass his important contribution.

Thanks,

I think this design is a regression. The intersecting colour circles is an overused theme and do not relate or illustrate to digital transmissions. The call letters in a tv shaped field are indicative of the old tv screen proportions. The design fails to represent a broadcast medium let alone brand CHCH in any way to grow and strengthen its market positioning. I am familiar with Paul Sych's work, perhaps CHCH should have let him develop the design concept. This so called new logo is an example of the emphasis on hasteful executions and little conception. There is a shortage of originality in design talent.

Paul Sych is an instructor that I had at OCAD and I know for sure that based on his incredible depth and work that this logo was forced in some way on him "those on-air balloons"? I know just by looking at the station ID that it was created in-house and I'm damn sure that they never asked Paul for any contribution or art direction, which it needs badly -- and it shows. Poor in-house art direction if you ask me. And that terrible music when the circles go round and round? I feel sorry for Paul actually. And that email above by that Juan Bonilla, what's with that? Is he apologizing to Paul?

Weird...

We are all in design together and its important to encourage old and new designers by ensuring we offer constructive feedback. All designers must consider the client and their feedback - designs can change over night from what was originally a thoughtful and forward logo. Peace designers!

Sure it looks dated. But it's supposed to right? Maybe the design is simply alluding to it's history. I think the old rounded tv proportions make it even more unique. What's wrong with a little 'retro'?

Dear "Anonymous" and everyone else,

I am no apologizing to Paul. In the interview I had with Design Edge, I mentioned Paul's contribution to the logo design, and the contribution was not mentioned in the article. As a fellow designer, I consider it necessary to give credit where credit is due. That is all.

On the other question, Paul's concept he submitted for the rebrand was also tied in to the coloured circles.

Have a great day everyone, including the "Anonymous" people :). Thanks for the comments.

When one reviews the 'Evolution' image of the CHCH logo, a keen eye will see that the in-house team wisely chose the logo that responds best to a refresh. The new logo looks even better on a white background, and a revision to the CHCH website colour palette would allow the new logo to really shine.
