New wallpaper is just this designer's type
TORONTO—A Toronto graphic designer and instructor has taken her love of type to the walls.

Zab Hobart lives in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood and has appropriately named her new wallpaper venture Parkdale Wallpaper Co., launching recently with three initial designs that include repetitive 5s, 7s, and manicules (pointing hands). The hand graphics are from the 1500s to early 20th century, she added.

She didn't design all the fonts for the wallpaper, but her goal is to represent all the major type families. "Think of it like I'm cooking, I'm the chef. I don't have to use my own ingredients to make a nice meal," she said via Skype from Montreal. "The idea is that I'm putting [the fonts] together in a new way in a new environment." The fonts she's using are ones she's purchased, she said.

She told the National Post the inspiration behind the wallpaper is Victorian architecture in Parkdale, "and since wallpaper was having a heyday in that era ... it seemed a natural fit."

The wallpaper is printed on demand in custom colour combinations, and sells from $10 per square foot, currently available from MADE at 867 Dundas St. W. in Toronto. She plans to sell the wallpaper through the website soon.

There could be other design variations of the wallpaper in the future. "Because it's print on demand, it has infinite possibilities," she said.

Hobart teaches typography at OCAD U and the York/Sheridan design program, as well as being the principal of Zab Design & Typography.

Very nice. Anonymous says few people use wallpaper, but that's just not true. Sure, it's used less than paint -- but it makes for a real nice feature wall.

I'd love to know:

1. The name of the print-on-demand service (although that might be considered a secret!)

and:

2. Was it difficult or even necessary to go through all the EULAs on the fonts? I know that House Industries will not allow sales of merch with their typefaces on it, at least not without a big extra fee.

and

3. When does your online shop open?

Cheers

This is a great story! Nice work Zab. Anonymous' comment above is wrong in a huge way. Interior designers are spec'ing wallpaper in North America and Europe in the biggest way. In Canada there's a paucity of good wallpaper designs and designers. As for Anonymous diss'ing our beloved neighbourhood, Parkdale in a name makes for a great brand. Parkdale could be the next ACME.

I am not sure about this as a long-term business venture. I can't see anyone wanting to put up giant numbers on their walls, except maybe a designer. Few people use wallpaper anymore, but if you do, there is so much choice out there. I don't mean to disrespect the area, but I do not associate Parkdale with trendy wall paper, so it is not the best name for the company especially if it moves to a new area.
