TORONTO—Concrete Design Communications has been crowned the winner of the contract to create advertising for major exhibits at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

The one-year contract (with an option for two more years) kicks off with a campaign to promote the ROM's Ultimate Dinosaurs: Giants from Gondwana, a world premiere exhibition opening June 23.

The campaign involves outdoor, magazine/newspaper, and augmented reality (AR) components, said John Pylypczak, Concrete's co-founder and creative director. AR enhances reality with digital technology. "We worked alongside the ROM to make sure the AR worked with our campaign," he said.

According to the ROM website, three AR stations in the exhibition allows visitors to "experience dinosaurs in surprising ways, including virtually fleshing out a dinosaur skeleton."

People can also experience AR on select advertising for the exhibition including on ROM transit shelter ads in the greater Toronto area. The augmented reality app is available through this page

For the highly-detailed graphics of dinosaurs used throughout the campaign, Concrete teamed up with an artist "who creates dinosaur illustrations based on skeletal information", explained Pylypczak, who added some of the images are from the exhibit itself.

Concrete said it won the ROM contract through a "comprehensive PFP process."

Kelvin Browne, vice president of marketing and major exhibitions for the ROM, added, “Concreteʼs presentation provided us with the confidence that they understood the ROMʼs strategic plan and could create dynamic marketing to bring it alive."

Anoymous #6: Nowhere in the article does it state that Concrete has taken credit for the augmented reality work. It merely states that Concrete's promotional campaign for the exhibit had to work with the AR. It then goes on to explain the AR components of the exhibit.

Perhaps Concrete regrets taking the credit for the mobile augmented reality content — the work was done by Meld Media.

Was there on opening night last friday... the exhibit's AR functionality needs a lot of work. It was really a big mess.

The website for this exhibit reads like an ad for an iPad/iPhone. You can download an app to experience the exhibit in 'augmented reality' but only if you own an Apple product. Or use the museum-provided Apple products. What about all of your visitors using Androids?

@Any2
I have to disagree with you Any2. The (small "c") conservative blue reflects the traditions of the ROM’s past while the slanted warm red reflects the ROM’s push to bring history to younger generations to enjoy.

Although the logo was created earlier, I also enjoy how the slanted red box resembles the new ‘crystal’ wing of the ROM. I must note, however, that I’m not crazy about the design of the new crystal wing but it is slowly growing on me and it certainly draws some international attention.

Others are certainly able to disagree with me, but that’s what these comment areas are for... to communicate how we as designers think, together.

There is a disconnect between the ROM logo (which looks like a toy store) and their advertising.

And because there isn't much else to go on. Did you encounter artists who didn't? "I think this T-Rex needs bigger arms."
