New type releases, GDC scholarship and the Rimmer library comes home
Quebec-based type designer André Simard, working with Fred Smeijers at OurType, has released a new sans serif. The OurType Corbeau family consists of eight weights of roman and slanted italic designs, each in three widths: condensed, normal and extended. It is available in OpenType Pro.
In other type news, the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) has announced a new scholarship fund. The Canada Type Scholarship Fund has been established through a donation from Toronto-based type developer Canada Type. It will be directed towards students furthering their studies in typography and will be available starting April 2013.
Canada Type chose Canada Day to announce its acquisition of the Rimmer Type Foundry (RTF) from Buffalo, NY-based P22 Type Foundry, Inc., repatriating the complete work of Canadian designer Jim Rimmer FGDC (1934-2010). The RTF collection includes such typeface families as Albertan, Amethyst, Credo, Dokument and Stern. Canada Type plans to remaster, expand and re-release the RTF library starting in fall 2012. Partial proceeds will go toward the Canada Type Scholarship Fund.
